Why we're asking for input

When consumers can make contactless payments quickly, safely and securely, it encourages more contactless transactions and helps build trust in the UK payments system.

We currently set limits on the value and number of contactless payments that can be made before requiring authentication, typically via PIN entry. Separately, banks and other payment service providers (PSPs) can apply their own contactless limits within our regulatory limits.

This paper sets out several ways we could approach contactless payment limits in the future, to give greater flexibility to PSPs, consumers and businesses to decide limits which work for them, while still reducing the risks of fraud.

Having considered the feedback to this Paper and consulted[2] on our proposed changes to contactless limits, we have now published the final standards[3] and guidance[4], which set out the regulatory changes to contactless payments.
